Gun Safety

Gun violence is a public health crisis and banks are important advocates for gun safety

Who we are

  • First bank to endorse Everytown for Gun Safety’s principles for responsible practices for gun manufacturers and distributors
  • The only bank to demand background checks and red flag laws in a letter to the U.S. Senate
  • Led a shareholder activism program against Sturm Ruger demanding that they follow common sense practices as established by Everytown
  • Proud participants in Wear Orange Day in support of National Gun Violence Awareness Day
  • First U.S. Bank to announce a policy against nuclear weapons

Where we stand

  • We do not lend to gun or ammunition manufacturers or distributors
  • We do not invest our own money in gun or ammunition manufacturers or distributors
  • We offer impact portfolios that screen out investments in guns and ammunition

What we do

Our Foundation implemented our “Rapid Response” program to donate immediately to victims of the El Paso and Dayton shootings and raised $38,000.

For 96 years, social responsibility has been embedded into our products, policies, programs, operations and mission. So two years ago when we were recognized by B Lab as a company that meets their rigorous standards for social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency, it was an important third party endorsement.

Today, I am proud to announce that we are the first bank in the United States to increase our minimum wage to $20 an hour for all full-time employees. By raising our minimum wage, we are continuing to honor our roots in the labor movement and to do our part in creating greater access and opportunity for our workers and their families.

With the launch of the “Hate Is Not Charitable Campaign”, the Amalgamated Foundation announced to the world that we would not sit quietly while organizations that promote hate continue to work the system to benefit their abhorrent actions.
